Tired of the same old domain names? The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is ready to change the Internet landscape by making it more global. If approved, the new regulations will offer a new range of options for naming a domain.
The ICANN meeting on this matter will take place on Thursday in Paris, when the proposal will be submitted to a vote.
A favorable vote would give companies the possibility to use their own brands as domain names. However, the option won’t come cheap. So far, no details have been given on a pricing plan.
As Paul Twomey, CEO of the non-profit organization, told the BBC, the revised naming convention would give birth to a “massive increase in the geography of the real estate of the Internet.”
The necessity of such a change could have come as a response to one of ICANN’s known issues: how long before they run out of available network addresses?
By approving the new regulations, aside from the worldwide know domains .com or .org, we could see domains such as .love or .hate, and why not, cities could have their own domain name too.
As Twomey pointed out for Business Week, the impact on the Internet would be similar to the phenomenon that hit the TV world, which multiplied channels from just a few to hundreds.
Another purpose would be addressing a cultural issue: how to make domain names available for non-English speakers, by allowing them to use non-Roman scripts.
As ICANN pointed out, they are working on breaking these boundaries and making domain names available in multiple alphabets.
