When most 11-year-old girls play with dolls and haven’t a care in the world, an 11-year-old Romanian girl is 21 weeks pregnant and has to have an abortion. Allegedly, she was raped by her 19-year-old uncle and wasn’t aware of her condition until her parents took her to a check-up, discovering she was 17 weeks pregnant.

According to The Associated Press, the Romania law states that abortions are allowed up until the 14^th week, if the pregnancy is dangerous to the mother or if the fetus has some kind of malformation.

As the girls was already in her 17 week, her parents planned to take her daughter to Britain, in order to have the abortion. There, a Romanian living in the U.K. would have paid for the abortion. Fortunately, an inter-ministerial panel in Romania ruled Friday that the 11-year-old girl could have the abortion.

“The committee has decided that a voluntary termination of the pregnancy can be carried out,” said health ministry official and panel member Vlad Iliescu. The fact that the girl was raped was a major factor in this decision, as she faced “major risks to her mental health,” added Iliescu, according to The Associated Press.

The Romanian Orthodox Church said that the girl shouldn’t have been allowed to have the abortion and, instead, she should have carried out her pregnancy. She could have put the baby for adoption. The Church even offered to raise the baby.

While one medical panel was in favor for the abortion, another one said that the girl, who was now 21-weeks pregnant, had no health problems and the pregnancy was “proceeding naturally.”

The uncle who raped the girl was nowhere to be found.
