Mariah Carey opened up about her surprise marriage to Nick
Cannon not so long ago, confessing to Elle magazine that before meeting her
husband, sometimes it got so bad that she wished she would be “kidnapped” from
her life.
Mariah Carey granted a very candid interview to Elle
magazine, confessing that before meeting husband Nick Cannon and rejoicing in
the bliss of having found true love, she sometimes had such low periods that
she wished she would be “kidnapped” from her life.
“I just wanted a way out, but I didn’t have one,” the singer
says, describing her life before as “unhappy.”
Nick Cannon however changed her perspective on things.
Mariah Carey had divorced music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1998, after a 5–year
marriage. A decade later, love appeared once again in her life, strong and
passionate enough for her to move quickly.
She explains in the interview that they “really kept the
whole relationship aspect of it quiet,” since they did not want “to give people
a chance to be like, ‘What are you doing? What are you talking about? This is
so quick.... Are you sure?’”
While there were such questions being raised around the time
of their marriage, they appeared after the deed had already been done and there
was no going back. The romantic lovebirds had it their way, relished in their
whirlwind romance and married in the Bahamas within months of sparking
up a relationship.
Rumors first started when Mariah Carey attended the TriBeCa
Film Festival in late April to promote her movie “Tennessee,” adorned with a nice dazzling diamond
wedding ring. She was promptly rumored to be engaged to actor Nick Cannon, 27, star
of MTV’s “Wild & Out.”
Mariah was already living intense happiness at the time. She
told Elle that Nick surprised her one night, while hanging out on the rooftop
of her Manhattan
apartment, by proposing with…. a candy pop ring. The sly actor had hidden a 17-carat
diamond inside the candy.
“They’ve been calling me Cinderella since I first started
out,” Mariah Carey humorously commented. “Most people would think, Okay,
please! This doesn't happen in real life.”
But it did to her.
And it got better: a few days later, her wish came true. “He
sort of kidnapped me and took me on a helicopter ride. Then he re-proposed,” a
happy Mariah Carey said.
