Miss USA Trips Again, Miss Venezuela Wins Miss Universe

The 57th Miss Universe title went to Venezuela, while Miss USA provided some undesired entertainment as she slipped during the evening gown parade. This year’s Miss Universe contest, which was held in Nha Trang in Vietnam, delighted the audience with beautiful women and a great show hosted by Jerry Springer and former Spice Girl Melanie Brown.

Chrystel Stewart, which represented the USA, caught her shoes on her gown and slipped, making it the second consecutive year this happens to Miss USA at this contest. Last year, Rachel Smith did the same thing, also in the evening gown parade. While this meant losing the contest for the USA beauty, the accident made her rise to popularity among YouTube users, which watched the clip over and over again.

Dayana Mendoza, the new Miss Universe, who received her crown from the 2007 winner of the pageant Riyo Mori of Japan, has been the victim of a kidnapping in her home country. According to Reuters, when asked to tell people about the event, Dayana Mendoza declined to do so, but instead said that "It is something that happens in my country and that's why I want to raise my voice and say violence is not the answer."

Four of the runner ups in the contest’s finale came from Latin America, namely from Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela.

Other winners of the contest were Miss Salvador, who won Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, who won best national costume. As expected, the public’s favorite was Lham Thuy Nguyen, who represented the country which hosted the show, Vietnam.
