Even though “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” was not
a big success at the box office, earning only $39 million in North
America and $2.9 million overseas, a sequel has been made, portraying
the lives of the four girlfriends in their first year of college.
If you’re wondering if the pants still exist, find out that
they do, although they experienced a total “makeover”. All covered in patches,
jewels and little rocks, they keep engraved the sweet memories and wishes of
the four young girls whom they belong to. They did not stop traveling either,
as they are the girls’ favorite companion. This time the pants visit New York, Vermont, Turkey and Greece and many other spots in
between.
The four friends got a little older and a little wiser.
However, time has not only affected their personalities, but also the bonds
between them.
“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” carries on with
the girls graduating high school and leaving for their respective colleges.
Carmen (“Ugly Betty” Emmy award-winning America Ferrera) goes to Yale to study
drama, Tibby, the rebel, (Amber Tamblyn) is accepted as a film student at New
York University, soccer-chick Bridget (“Gossip
Girl” star Blake Lively) leaves for Brown University and quiet Lena (Alexis
Bledel, one of the “Gilmore Girl” halves) ends up at the Rhode Island School of
Design.
Based on the last three books of Ann Brashares’ series of
novels, the film depicts the fresh experiences and adventures of the quartet, on
the girls’ way to maturity. Although a lot of controversial things occur, all
problems finish off easily, maybe too trimly, especially in light of the
chocolate box ending.
The Warner Bros. sequel is due for release on Wednesday and
some of the glitter and ease of the original movie, as well as its cast, which
became progressively popular in the past three years, may actually lure
girlfriends in theatres and surpass the low revenue of the first film, in spite
of the skeptical reviews.
