“Fracture” Debuts At No. 2 In American Box Office

Teen thriller “Disturbia” captivated moviegoers once more this weekend, with impressive ticket sales of $13.5 million.

The film made its debut last week and a glorious debut it was, with earnings worth $23 million from theatres in the United States and Canada. It also displaced “Blades of Glory” from the number one spot.

Described as a teen version of the Hitchcock classic “Rear Window,” “Disturbia” shows young actor Shia LaBeouf as a troubled teenager under house arrest who spies on his neighbors out of boredom and spots something potentially sinister next door.

“Disturbia” maintained its top position this weekend, while the newly released “Fracture,” a thriller starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling, occupied second place.

“Fracture” did nicely over the Friday through Sunday period, selling tickets worth $11.2 million. The movie is a sleek cat-and-mouse game between a sharp, unscrupulous prosecutor (Gosling) and a brilliant, cunning old man who attempted to murder his wife (Hopkins).

Third place goes to the already veteran “Blades of Glory,” the ice-skating comedy starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder in a love-hate professional relationship – on the ice. The movie slipped to No. 3 with $7.8 million.

“Vacancy” is another new thriller on this week’s box office chart, coming in fourth place with $7.6 million earnings. Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale star as a couple trying to escape a gory slaughter in a road-side motel.

The family flick “Meet The Robinson” fell one place to No. 5 with $7.1 million. Comedy-action movie “Hot Fuzz” made its debut at number 6, with $5.8 million. Another veteran on this week’s chart is the family comedy “Are We Done Yet?” starring Ice Cube. Currently at number 7, the movie raked in $5.2 million.

“In the Land of Women,” starring Adam Brody and Meg Ryan, debuted at No. 8 with $4.9 million, while Halle Berry's “Perfect Stranger” slipped all the way to No. 9 with $4.1 million. “Wild Hogs” rounded out the Top 10 with $2.9 million after being in seventh place last week.

The estimated receipt figures are from Box Office Mojo.
