Mobile phone lovers rejoice! The Golden Age of mobile phones
is about to start. After Apple has ignited a real revolution by showing its
upcoming iPhone, now Motorola counterattacks with a mobile phone with
full-motion video display. The new Motorola’s gadget will be able to play
movies stored on removable storage cards.
Eric Zander, Motorola’s CEO, revealed some details about the
new tech-wonder during his speech at Software 2007 conference. "We are
going to show a device next week," Zander promised, saying it would show
30 frames-a-second, full-motion video. "It is a media monster."
The new device will be launched first in Europe,
due to higher availability of 3G Networks. Motorola will partner with an
unnamed company that can fit movies on Secure Digital (SD) cards capable of
storing several gigabytes.
"We are working with another company to deliver movies
on SD cards. You can start watching unbelievable quality movies," Zander unveiled.
The new device can be Motorola’s response to Apple’s iPhone
debut. Last month, Apple confirmed it will ship the iPhone in the U.S. on June 11, the first day of Apple's annual
Worldwide Developers Conference in San
Francisco. The 4 gigabyte version will cost 499
dollars. The 8 gigabyte version will cost 599 dollars. The device features a touch-screen
input technology called Multi- Touch, controlled by sliding a finger across its
touch-sensitive, 9- centimetre (3.5-inch), 160-pixel-per-inch display. The
display automatically switches between landscape or portrait mode thanks to a
built-in sensor.
The iPhone, which runs the Macintosh operating system,
seamlessly syncs data with a desktop computer, including music and videos from
iTunes, contacts, calendars, photos, notes, contacts, bookmarks and email
accounts. The 11.6-millimetre thick device also sports a 2-megapixel camera,
headset jack, 3.5-millimetre audio jack, SIM tray, a sleep-wake switch,
speaker, microphone and an iPod dock connector. The quad-band GSM plus EDGE
phone also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities. Future versions will carry
3G capabilities. Apple said that iPhone will be launched in Europe,
later this year.
Two years ago, Motorola joined Apple on building first
iTunes compatible phone: Motorola ROKR. Due to its limited storage capacity and
unattractive design, the ROKR was considered a flop. Shortly after, Eric Zander
unveiled that Apple is working on its own mobile phone.
