This year’s Tony Awards honored the musical “Spring Awakening,” which took home eight trophies, and the play “The Coast of Utopia,” which gathered seven awards.
Sunday night was glorious for some of the nominees at the 61st annual Tony Awards (official name The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre), who became multiple winners of Broadway.
“Spring Awakening,” based on the 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind and set to pop-rock music by Duncan Sheik, received a record eleven nominations, including one for Best Musical.
It took the awards for best musical, best direction (Michael Mayer), best original score for composer Duncan Sheik, best book for Steven Sater, best choreography for Bill Jones, best featured actor in a musical for 22-year-old John Gallagher Jr., best orchestration and best lighting design.
The other grand victor at the 2007 Tony Awards was the trilogy “The Coast of Utopia,” written by Tom Stoppard and focusing on the life of 19th century Russian intellectuals. The entire trilogy, comprising the plays “Voyage,” “Shipwreck,” and “Salvage,” lasts almost nine hours.
“Coast” had an impressive ten nominations, including Best Play, and won in three categories. Jennifer Ehle was named best featured actress, while Billy Crudup won best featured actor. “The Coast of Utopia” also won best play.
The cast of “Coast” includes Brian F. O'Byrne, Richard Easton, Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton, Martha Plimpton, David Harbour, Jason Butler Harner and Amy Irving.
Other awards at Sunday’s ceremony: best actress in a play for Julie White (“The Little Dog Laughed”); best leading actor in a musical for David Hyde Pierce (“Curtains”); best actor in a play for Frank Langella (“Frost/Nixon”); and best leading actress in a musical for Christine Ebersole (“Grey Gardens”).
