Some women decide that applying makeup every day is too much of a hassle and opt for the permanent kind – a new study shows the procedure is not without risks, some of them quite serious.
Swelling, bumps, allergic reactions – this isn’t half the worst of it. US researchers now warn that cosmetic tattooing may lead to serious disfigurement.
Masja Straetemans of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and her colleagues reported Wednesday that the cosmetic technique, which is supposed to beautify a person’s face and simplify life, can actually do the complete opposite, causing long-term disfiguring reactions.
Tattooing meant to replace lipstick or eyeliner caused adverse reactions in numerous patients, particularly in those with a history of allergy, the report said. More than nine out of ten side effects included tenderness, swelling and/or itching. Four out of five experienced bumps, Straetemans reported.
Most of these reactions however were caused by a single product line of inks, which were recalled in 2004.
“Of the 92 women [in the study], 89 had used ink shades from the specific company in at least one procedure after June 1, 2003, before the development of health problems,” Straetemans said. She added that there was no data on the ink used on the remaining four women.
The study showed that persons who had undergone cosmetic tattooing were still experiencing adverse reactions to the procedure several months later, some even after three years.
Those interested in getting permanent makeup done are advised to consult their dermatologist.
