Brazil Crash Chile And Advances In Copa America Semis

Defending champion Brazil sink Chile in a 6-1 victory on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Copa America.

Brazil, who had already beaten Chile 3-0 in a Group B clash, opened the scoring in the 16th with a header from Roma defender Juan. Seven minutes later Julio Baptista scored a second goal and shortly after Robinho’s shot has found the net for 3-0.

In the second half, Robinho did it again in the 50th minute, followed by Josue in the 68th minute.

Humberto Suazo, Chile's best player in the Copa with a total of three goals, made it 5-1 in the 73rd minute, but the match was concluded after Vagner Love scored the sixth Brazilian goal, seven minutes from time.

"It is true we played well," Brazilian coach Carlos Dunga admitted. "The good thing about today is that the whole team played well."

On Tuesday, in the semis, Brazil will play against 14-time champions Uruguay, also thrashed host Venezuela by 4-1 earlier Saturday. Uruguay opened the score in in the 38th minute with a goal by striker Diego Forlan. Venezuelan Juan Arango netted the ball with a free kick only three minutes later, but Uruguay scored other three goals during the second half thanks to Pablo Garcia, Cristian Rodriguez and again Diego Forlan

"I am very happy with the way the team improved play, we beat no less than the host," Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. "This is the first step of what we wanted, to stay until the end."

On Sunday, Mexico is to play Paraguay, and Argentina will face Peru, with the other semifinal spots at stake.
