Mandy Patinkin Leaves “Criminal Minds”

Mandy Patinkin will no longer grace television sets with his presence as Jason Gideon on CBS’s drama “Criminal Minds,” according to media reports this week.

The 54-year-old actor has been on the successful show “Criminal Minds” since September 2005 but it would seem the next September would not find on set filming as Special Agent Jason Gideon.

The Hollywood Reporter and Variety report that Patinkin is leaving the show over “creative differences.” ABC Studios and CBS Paramount Network TV are allegedly not taking the move easy, especially since it has not been discussed with Patinkin.

“His departure from the series will be explained to audiences in an episode to be filmed in the near future and broadcast early next season,” the companies said in a statement. “A new character will be added to the series for next season.”

The companies said Patinkin was not leaving due to disputes over contract negotiations or salary issues.

Patinkin’s representative has issued a statement that says: “Due to creative differences, Mandy has asked not to return to 'Criminal Minds' this season. Mandy would like to thank the studios and network for releasing him from the series.”

The statement adds that the actor “wishes the cast and crew continued success in all of their endeavors, and he looks forward to continuing to work with the Disney and CBS companies in other capacities in the future.”

Variety reports that executive producer Ed Bernero commented on the “Criminal Minds Fanatic” website: “"He gave us no advance notice that anything was wrong, no opportunity to find a way to make the loss of this character work.”

He adds there was “no warning”: “He left us completely in the proverbial lurch,” Bernero said.

Mandy Patinkin has worked with CBS before, on the long-running medical drama “Chicago Hope,” which earned him an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Dr. Jeffrey Geiger.

His acting work includes roles in “Law & Order,” “Boston Public” and “Dead Like Me.”
