Sopranos Receive 15 Emmy Nominations

The Emmy Awards are serenading mob drama “The Sopranos” with 15 nominations this year, including best actor and best actress nods for the show’s stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, respectively.

“The Sopranos” has been nominated for best drama series, an honor the show will be competing for against “Heroes,” “Boston Legal” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The show had the most nominations for a series, followed by “Ugly Betty” with 11 nominations, and “Grey’s Anatomy’ and “30 Rock” with 10 each. The greatest number of nominations however, went to the made-for-TV movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” with an impressive 17 nods.

James Gandolfini will vie for best drama series actor with Hugh Laurie of “House,” James Spader of “Boston Legal,” Denis Leary of “Rescue Me,” and Kiefer Sutherland of “24,” who won last year.

Edie Falco is up against Kyra Sedgwick of “The Closer,” Sally Field of “Brothers & Sisters,” Minnie Driver of “The Riches,” Patricia Arquette of “Medium” and last year’s winner, Mariska Hargitay of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” for the best drama series actress trophy.

“The Sopranos” premiered in 1999 and had along and prosperous life until June 2007, when the series came to its inconclusive and beguiling end. During its history, the show has won critical appraise and numerous prizes to prove it: eighteen Emmys and five Golden Globes, among others.

Cast member Michael Imperioli was nominated this year for best supporting dramatic actor while Aida Turturro and Lorraine Bracco were nominated for supporting actress.

The Emmy Awards ceremony will be broadcast September 16 by Fox from the Shrine Auditorium.
