Australian Authorities Reveal New Evidence Against Haneef

The Indian doctor recently released from police custody in Australia may have been linked to the failed car bomb attacks in Britain after all, authorities said on Tuesday after revealing new evidence in the terrorist plot.

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said that Mohamed Haneef could have indeed knowledge of the bomb plots after investigators came across an Internet conversion between him and his brother Shuaib.

“Investigators consider Haneef's attempted urgent departure from Australia on a one-way ticket, for a purpose which appears to be a false pretext, to be highly suspicious and may reflect Haneef's awareness of the conspiracy to plan and prepare the acts of terrorism in London and Glasgow,” Andrew told journalists on Tuesday.

Haneef was arrested on July 2 while he was preparing to leave Australia and charged with supporting terrorist actions. Initially, police said a SIM card belonging to Haneef has been found in the vehicle allegedly rammed into Glasgow international airport by his cousin Kafeel Ahmed.

After a short period, the investigators said the SIM card was discovered in the possession of  Sabeel Ahmed, Kafeel’s brother, in Liverpool. From that point, the entire case built by investigators arround Haneef crumbled and another mistake made by the same prosecutors regarding the doctor’s whereabouts before arriving in Australia sealed his release.

Charges against the 27-year-old doctor were dropped, but his visa was revoked and Andrew had to come forward on Tuesday to motivate his decision of not granting visa for Haneef.

”The whole circumstances surrounding Haneef's attempted hasty departure from Australia, including chat-room conversations, when viewed against his clear prior association with the Ahmed brothers, led me to form a reasonable suspicion as required by the migration legislation,” Andrews said.

He added that the cancellation of Haneef’s visa was based on information received from the Australian Federal Police and it was “in the national interest based on that advice.”
