Although he has been first
charged about five years ago, R. Kelly has been announced to finally face a
trial on September 17. The famous R&B singer has been accused in 2002 after
a video was allegedly discovered of Kelly recording himself having sex with a
girl under the age of consent. Prosecutors said the girl was 14-years-old at
the time of the incident.
R. Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, has pleaded
not guilty to the 14 counts of child pornography. If found guilty of having had
sex with an underage girl and also putting it on tape The Grammy-wining singer
faces up to 15 years in jail and a $100,000 fine. The trial is expected to last
three to four weeks.
"As Robert (Kelly) said many
times, he believes in our system of justice," a spokesperson for the
singer told MTV News. "He is looking forward to finally having his day in
court. He's confident that when all the facts come out, it will be clear he's
not guilty of any crime."
R. Kelly’s attorneys have tried
to raise doubts about the identity of the man on the tape, saying his likeness to
the singer may have been computer generated.
The popular R&B singer’s
career that continued untroubled by the legal troubles might be seriously endangered
by this trial. Since 2002 the artist released five albums and had three
nationwide tours.
