Kaczynski Says Elections Will Take Place This Autumn

After consulting with members of his Law and Justice party, Poland’s Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said on Saturday that early elections will be held this autumn, most likely in October.

Roman Giertych, the chairman of the other coalition party League of Polish Families (LPR) and deputy prime minister, said the premier will disband the coalition in the following days. After dissolving the governing coalition, LPR and Samoobrona members will be most likely removed from Kaczynski’s cabinet as a last decision before the parliament’s summer break.

Poland’s has been the stage of ardent disputes between politicians, mainly after Kaczynski dismissed the former deputy premier and Self-Defense (Samoobrona) leader Andrzej Lepper on July 9 for alleged involvement in a corruption scandal.

Lepper denied the allegations, saying he is the victim of a plot built by Kaczynski and his party. He was soon followed by other members of the cabinet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBS) and even the national police.

As the ruling coalition began to falter, Kaczynski acknowledged Poland can’t be ruled by a minority government after Samoobrona left the coalition on August 5 and decided to call for early elections two years before their scheduled term.
