2K and Gearbox Ready to Cross Next-Gen Borderlands

2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, has teamed up with acclaimed developer Gearbox Software to bring out Borderlands, a next-gen first person shooter for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Gearbox wants to revolutionize the “old” FPS gameplay by adding in its new franchise a combination of ingredients like player customization, first-person interaction and vehicular combat never seen before.

To do that, Gearbox has allegedly developed a new technology that should add unprecedented depth to the gameplay, through the so called layers of action and the four player co-operative mode.

According to the press release, Borderlands features a groundbreaking content generation system allowing for near-endless variety in missions, environments, enemies, weapons, item drops and character customization. Apparently, it will be an open-space FPS with RPG elements (much like STALKER, Shadow of Chernobyl or id Software’s upcoming Rage), set up in a post apocalyptic décor, but we’ll hopefully have more details in the next few days.

"Borderlands represents an important evolutionary leap in game design and technology," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K.

"By utilizing revolutionary new technology to create thousands of unique, randomly generated missions, weapons and situations, Borderlands will raise the bar for next gen action games."

Players can either choose to join or leave the online multi-player mode (nothing spectacular here though…), although we have not yet fully understood the true nature of this four player co-op gameplay and if Borderlands is an online focused game (the press release states that there is also a single player mode).

Borderlands features life-like character animations, impressive real-time physics, and customizable vehicles. "Borderlands creates a universe of gameplay that goes far beyond anything anyone would expect. We’re tapping into every bit of Gearbox Software’s experience with the biggest science fiction video game franchises, then taking everything way past the next level," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software.

"The team at 2K Games shares our passion for pushing boundaries in gameplay and storytelling and are absolutely perfect partners for Borderlands."

Game Informer’s September issue has some details about Borderlands, but all we know for now is that the game is heading to PCs and next-gen consoles, and that is slated for a holiday 2008 debut.
