Amy Winehouse’s record label has confirmed that the British singer, hospitalized for a drug overdose earlier this month, will not perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 9.
Universal Republic Records, Amy’s U.S. record label, released a statement to the Associated Press, saying: “In a continued effort to support Amy Winehouse's well being, in addition to the postponement of her U.S. tour, all other U.S. appearances have been canceled.”
The 23-year-old singer has been nominated for three MTV awards, including female artist of the year and best new artist. Amy was also scheduled to perform, along with fellow guests Foo Fighters, Kanye West and Rihanna, among others.
Last week, the singer’s publicist announced that Amy would postpone her planned U.S. and Canadian dates, due to “health issues.” The statement said: “Due to the rigors involved in touring, Amy Winehouse has been advised to postpone her upcoming September U.S. and Canadian tour dates.”
Publicist Tracey Miller added: “Plans are being made to reschedule her U.S. tour for early 2008. Until then, Amy has been ordered to rest and is working with medical professionals to address her health.”
Amy is currently vacationing in St. Lucia with husband Blake Fielder-Civil, apparently trying to drive the demons away. Her parents and parents-in-law are adamant that both Amy and Blake check into rehab.
After being hospitalized earlier this month when she collapsed after ingesting a cocktail of ecstasy, cocaine, Ketamine and alcohol, Amy briefly checked into an Essex clinic, only to leave it and return to her wayward lifestyle.
Late last week disturbing photographs surfaced, showing a bloody and dizzy Amy in London. The singer reportedly got into a scrape with her husband but she would not press charges or discuss the matter.
Furthermore, she allegedly texted celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton, defending Blake. “Blake is the best man in the world,” she wrote, adding that “he saved my life.”
It was only two days ago that Amy’s father-in-law, Giles Fielder-Civil told BBC Radio 5 that both singer and her husband are drug addicts. He urged fans to boycott her music so that the couple would seek medical help.
Several British tabloids report today that Amy and Blake are contemplating having a baby – this would allegedly force them to take responsibility over their lives.
