AOL To Launch A New Social News Site, Propeller.com

Earlier this month Netscape Director Tom Drapeau wrote on the company’s blog about the changes the company is preparing for the Netscape.com site.

“There are some upcoming changes to the Netscape.com site that we hope will improve your experience. We'll be providing two different news options for you based on what you've told us over the past few months." wrote Drapeau in its blog.

For the moment on Netscape.com there are still available social news sites, but according to an update posted by Drapeau this content will be moved to a new site, Propeller.com.

“The Netscape social news experience that you are currently using today will be migrated and revealed soon at http://www.propeller.com/. We're working hard behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transition before we officially launch at this new destination.” wrote Drapeau on the company’s blog.

For the moment Propeller.com isn’t working and Drapeau didn’t reveal any other details beside a new logo, which looks very good.

Also it seems like the new site will be closely integrated with new Netscape portal, which for the moment is working at http://netscape.aol.com.

“It is important to us that you feel empowered to choose how you want to consume your news and participate in the community. As we mentioned in a recent post, the Netscape.com site will soon be redirected to the new Netscape portal, a more traditional and editorially-driven news experience. It's already live, so you can check it out now if you haven't already. You'll notice some elements of our social news site there in short order, so that it will be easy for you to go back and forth and engage in each if you like.” explained Drapeau.

The idea to transform Netscape.com is a social news site similar to Digg.com was initially the idea of former AOL/Weblogs Inc. exec Jason Calacanis, which is currently the head of Mahalo.com.
