A-Rod to Leave the Yankees?

Alex Rodriguez, commonly nicknamed "A-Rod", could leave the New York Yankees for the Chicago Cubs in a major deal that will allegedly include an ownership stake in the team, the New York Magazine wrote on Sunday.

According to the magazine, Rodriguez could sign a 10-year contract with the Cubs, a deal worth around 30 million dollars a year. With such a contract, Rodriguez could opt-out of the 252 million-dollar agreement he had with the Texas Rangers six years ago at the end of this season. He ultimately was traded to the Yankees in 2004.

Scott Boras, "A-Rod’s" agent, has allegedly already begun talks about his client’s future transfer and contract details with the top candidate to buy the Cubs. If that proves to be true, the New York Yankees could file tampering charges.

"It's a silly story, and we don't believe it," Yankees executive Randy Levine told ESPN.com. "However, if it was true, it would be grounds to disqualify the applicant even before he went through the process, because it would demonstrate a disregard for major league rules and procedures, and we're confident the commissioner would feel the same way."

Rodriguez and Boras also denied New York Magazine’s story. “A-Rod” labeled it as “nonsense” in an interview for ESPN.com before Sunday's game against the Jays, while his agent declared to the Associated Press that he hasn't "talked to anyone" about the player he represents.

The favorite to buy the Chicago Cubs so far is John Canning, chairman of private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners LLC. The club is in the process of being purchased by an entity controlled by real-estate investor Sam Zell. Mark Cuban, NBA’s Dallas Mavericks owner, also manifested his interest in buying the Cubs.

"Great players with great demand create great rumors," Boras told the Associated Press. But although Rodriguez stated he wanted to "100% stay in New York. Period," I wouldn’t put my money on it.

With about a week left of the season, Rodriguez is the top candidate to receive the American League MVP title. He is batting .312 and leads the major leagues with 52 home runs, 146 RBI and 138 runs scored and he’s currently leading the Yankees to a 5 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League wild card race.
