Indiana Jones Thief Apprehended

The mystery of the stolen “Indiana Jones 4” material has been solved, as Los Angeles police arrested a suspect Tuesday afternoon.

DreamWorks Pictures SKG announced earlier this week that computers and photographs connected to the much-anticipated fourth installment in the “Indiana Jones” series had been stolen, without giving details about the circumstances in which the theft occurred.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested a man Tuesday afternoon, during a sting operation in West Hollywood, reports Reuters. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said police officers posed as potential buyers of the stolen items and arrested the man on suspicion of receiving stolen property.

The material had reportedly been advertised for sale through emails sent out to entertainment-gossip Web sites.

“He is on what is known as parole hold,” Whitmore said, declining to reveal the man’s name. “We believe there's more people involved and don't want to release the name until this plays out,” he added, as quoted by Reuters.

DreamWorks had expressed concerns that the thief would attempt to sell the stolen items. Spielberg’s spokesperson, Marvin Levy, said: “We want to warn the media that anything that is offered is stolen property. We know it is out there.”

Kristin Stark, a spokeswoman for DreamWorks, commented that the missing items contained “confidential and proprietary materials” related to the movie.

According to Reuters, the sheriff's department was notified that some items had been taken from Spielberg's production office on the Universal Pictures lot on September 24.

There has been a happy buzz about the forthcoming “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” It is slated for a May 2008 release, nearly 19 years after the third installment, 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”

Harrison Ford, now in his 60s, is set to reprise his role as the adventurous archeologist Indiana Jones. Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent are also part of the cast.

Karen Allen returns as Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s love interest and ally in 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Sean Connery has refused to reprise his role as Indy’s father in the fourth installment.

Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas have been especially secretive about the film’s details. It was only in early September that the film’s title was revealed, when Shia LaBeouf visibly enjoyed spilling the beans at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas.

“So I've been sworn to secrecy by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas not to tell you the title of the next Indiana Jones movie,” the young actor said. “What the hell, I'm 21 and we're in Vegas, baby, so here it goes.

“The official title to the next Indiana Jones installment: ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’ It's a big deal; nobody's ever heard it before.”
