Snoop Dogg Honored by VH1 for Musical Career

The fourth annual VH1 Hip Hop Honors celebrated Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott for their musical achievements during an extravagant awards show in New York Monday, Oct. 8.

Other artists or acts to be honored alongside Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott were '80s rap trio Whodini, A Tribe Called Quest, music executive Andre Harrell and producer Teddy Riley for creating the “New Jack Swing” sound, reports the Associated Press.

Also receiving hip-hop laurels Monday: Fab Five Freddy and Charlie Ahern for the groundbreaking movie “Wildstyle,” based on break-dancing graffiti rap.

It was indeed a star-studded event, with the industry’s most appreciated and successful artists and acts present to celebrate “the music’s innovators and icons – past, present and future.”

Nelly and Jermaine Dupri broke out in ‘80s dance moves during a tribute to Whodini, reports the AP, while the artist delivered their classic raps. Eve, Ciara, Keyshia Cole and Timbaland united on stage to perform Missy Elliott’s hits, as she watched from the audience.

Bow Wow joined Snoop on stage and rapped, while Busta Rhymes, Common and Lupe Fiasco performed Tribe's “Scenario.” Other stars present were LL Cool J, Ne-Yo, Chris Rock and host Tracy Morgan.

While Snoop Dog was impressed at such an honor, he was not at a loss for words, telling the Associated Press: “These are guys that I grew up wanting to be like and learning their words and dreaming and hoping and wishing, and now they know who I am and they respect me and they say that my work has put me in the position that I can be commended — it's unbelievable, I can't believe it.”

Among the role models Snoop was referring to was previous honoree and rap legend KRS-One.

Snoop also took the time to express his support for hip-hop: “This is the best thing for us to happen for hip-hop, it's positive,” he said. “These awards shows - never no violence it's never negative, never anything in the media the wrong way, it's always a great celebration of music and the artists and what they did.”

Previous VH1 Hip Hop Honors honorees include: Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Tupac Shakur, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Notorious B.I.G., Afrika Bambaataa, Beastie Boys and Russell Simmons, among many others.
