ConAgra Recalls All Pot Pies Amid Salmonella Alert

ConAgra Foods announced Thursday that it was recalling all varieties of its frozen pot pies amid growing concerns over a salmonella outbreak that federal health officials have linked to the food company’s products.

ConAgra Foods issued a news release Thursday informing that the health advisory issued earlier this week, through which consumers were instructed to refrain from eating certain frozen pot pies produced by the company has turned into a voluntary recall of all its frozen pot pies.

All varieties of Banquet brand frozen pot pies and all varieties of store brand frozen pot pies sold under the names of Albertson's, Hill Country Fare, Food Lion, Great Value, Kirkwood, Kroger, Meijer and Western Family are being voluntarily recalled “to ensure consumer safety,” the release says.

The pot pies, made at the company’s Marshall, Mo., plant, have been linked by health officials to a spreading salmonella outbreak. More than 165 cases of salmonella contamination in 31 states could have been caused by ConAgra frozen pot pies.

The Centers for Disease and Control said that no fatalities have been reported so far. A CDC representative said the largest numbers of salmonella cases had been reported in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Missouri.

Tuesday’s health advisory informed that ConAgra had halted production at its plant, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service continued its investigation.

ConAgra said in its warning that it believes the illnesses may be related to “consumer undercooking of the product.” The company advised consumers to cook the products thoroughly, as they are not ready-to-eat.

ConAgra emphasized that the cooking instructions for these products are “specifically designed to eliminate the presence of common pathogens found in many uncooked products” and said it was working with USDA “to identify any additional steps that may be appropriate, including potential changes that may further clarify cooking instructions for consumers.”

The company also assured consumers that it was “revising its packaging to more clearly illustrate different cooking times for Banquet pot pies related to varying wattages of microwaves.”

Thursday’s news release explains that ConAgra is recalling all brands of frozen pot pies so as “to avoid any confusion on pot pie varieties.” ConAgra spokeswoman Stephanie Childs said the recall is meant to ensure that consumers understand “that we do not want them to eat this product and want them to either discard it or return it to their store for a refund.”

The food company is offering refunds, through the mail or retailers.

Infection with salmonella is known as salmonellosis. Among its symptoms are diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting. Approximately 40,000 persons in the USA become infected with salmonella each year; around 600 people die annually from it, according to the CDC.

Earlier this year, the CDC investigated what it believed to be the first salmonella outbreak associated with peanut butter in U.S. history, specifically, ConAgra’s Peter Pan product and others.
