Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are excited to take
their three-year relationship to the next level and tie that old-fashioned
knot, now that California
may make marriage legal for gay couples.
Ellen DeGeneres generously shared the happy news during a
taping of her show Thursday, an episode which is scheduled to air Friday. Longtime
girlfriend Portia de Rossi was reportedly in the studio, which was instantly
filled with cheers from the audience, according to media reports.
The Associated Press was first to report the possible
wedding. A person close to the production shared the news with the
AP, on condition of anonymity.
Thursday was memorable in that California’s Supreme Court struck down the
state’s laws against gay marriage. Ellen and Portia would certainly be the
first celebrity couple to put that ruling into action.
In a 4-3 decision, California Supreme Court decided to
uphold the ban against same-sex marriages, saying that gender discrimination
violates the Constitution’s equality right. The court ruled that people have a fundamental
“right to marry” the partner they wish to.
Religious and conservative groups are protesting against the
new court ruling and support a proposed legislation for the November ballot
that would overturn the decision, banning again same-sex marriages. The
proposed ballot initiative has gathered more than one million signatures and
opponents expect a victory in November.Ellen, who celebrated her 50th birthday this week, and Portia,
35, of “Ally McBeal” fame, began dating in late 2004. At the time, Portia was appearing
on the FOX sitcom “Arrested Development.”
Friday’s episode will also show viewers clips from Ellen’s
birthday bash on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank,
where the comedienne now tapes her show. Guests that showed up to congratulate
the birthday girl were Tom Hanks with wife Rita Wilson, newlyweds Mariah Carey and
Nick Cannon and David and Courtney Cox Arquette, among others.
