Eric Kim, Intel's senior vice president, announced during his keynote presentation at the Intel Developer Forum a new microprocessor for the consumer electronics market. The system on a chip, also known as SoC, is called the Media Processor CE 3100, and will be made available starting next month.
The new processor is capable of being integrated into TV sets and, after doing so, people will be able to use these devices to access the Internet while watching their favorite TV shows.
The company that Intel partnered with in order to bring such services to the market is Yahoo. The Internet company has developed a part of the software that enables people to benefit of the future devices.
The solution that the two companies implemented adds a snippet bar at the bottom of the screen where links to several Internet services will be available. People will be able to access these links whenever they want and browse the Internet while watching TV.
The revenues will be generated by the ads that will be displayed with the help of the snippet bar. This might revolutionize the way TV adds are presented, and keep TV as the favorite advertising medium for years to come.
Eric Kim said in his keynote speech that “TV will fundamentally change how we talk about, imagine and experience the Internet. No longer just a passive experience unless the viewer wants it that way, Intel and Yahoo are proposing a way where the TV and Internet are as interactive, and seamless, as possible.”
