NY-Toronto Greyhound Bus Crashes near Scranton, 41 Injured

A Greyhound bus with at least 50 passengers aboard drove of the Interstate 380 near Scranton and rolled over early Sunday morning. Dozens were injured in the crash.

About 41 injured passengers were rushed to several hospitals near Scranton, including Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg and the Community Medical Center in Scranton, said the State police at Dunmore, Lackawanna County.

Two injured are reportedly in critical condition. Emergency personnel took the remaining passengers to a fire hall.

The, which took off from Philadelphia originally, was heading from New York City to Toronto. A stop was scheduled to take place in Syracuse, N.Y., before the bus would reach its final destination.

The bus was heading to its destination on I-380 when all of a sudden it went off the highway near the Daleville exit in Covington Township around 4 a.m. The bus entered the median, flipped over and landed on its roof, a very dangerous impact for the passengers inside the vehicle.

Two passengers were trapped inside and only the emergency rescue crews managed to extricate the out.

There were 54 passengers aboard the Greyhound bus according to the local police. The crash took place about 50 miles north of Allentown.

The cause of the accident hasn’t been found out yet. Police are still investigating the case, but the bad weather conditions might have had a big role as about 7 inches of snow poured on Friday in the region and freezing rain fell at times on Saturday.

"A cause had not yet been determined and we are cooperating fully with the police and we will conduct our own investigation," said Greyhound's Dustin Clark according to the United Press International.
