Nestle Recalls Lean Cuisine Meals

Some types of Lean Cuisine meals may contain "foreign materials" that could lead to death, the Agriculture Department announced.

There have been reported chunks of blue plastic found in Lean Cuisine's Cafe Classics Pesto Chicken with Bow Tie Pasta, Spa Cuisine Chicken Mediterranean and Dinnertime Selects Chicken Tuscan, said Roz O'Hearn, spokesperson for Nestle Prepared Foods Co. Due to the seven reports, the packaged food company recalled an estimated 900,000 pounds worth of meals.

At least one customer has reported an injury from pieces of plastic found in the food products.

People who bought the recalled Lean Cuisine meals are strongly recommended to send back the products to the store where they were procured. Instead, they will receive a full refund.

According to Amanda Eamich, spokesman for the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recalled products were sent across the whole country. This is why it will take some time until finding the exact areas where tainted shipments have been distributed.

The contaminated dinners were processed between Aug. 18 and Oct. 27, officials said. Consumers are advised to dial 800-227-6188 in order to check the production codes on the side of Lean Cuisine packages, so as to find out if their meals are contaminated with plastic.

The USDA has ranked the recall as Class I, being considered a "health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."
