Netflix Inc doesn’t waste any time or opportunities. The online DVD rental company reached a partnership with Samsung Electronics Co under which the latter’s Blu-ray DVD devices can now play videos streamed over the Web from Netflix. This is Netflix’s fourth such partnership. The other big players with which the company reached similar agreements are Blu-ray DVD player maker LG Electronics, Microsoft Corp (Xbox 360) and Roku Inc.
Users of Samsung BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 Blu-ray players can now upgrade their devices at no additional cost in order to have access to Netflix’s streaming service and its library of more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes. Users who buy the Samsung devices can access Netflix’s streaming service, while those who bought the devices before the agreement between the two companies will have to connect them to the Internet to download new software and make them compatible with the new service.
The terms and financial details of the Netflix-Samsung agreement weren’t disclosed.
The BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 Blu-ray players are available for around $400 and $300 online. If you are interested, Amazon is having a sale on the P2550 right now for only $215. More Netflix service compatible devices are expected to follow.
However, you’ll still need an $8.95 per month Netflix subscription and don’t forget the $1 for the Blu-ray rental service.
Netflix and Samsung also plan to integrate Netflix's Internet service into other electronics products, but they didn’t mention which. Analysts are anticipating that in a few years, the new TV sets will broadly come with access to Internet-based entertainment services.
