Los Angeles - When high-flying Vince Carter went down, rookie Chris Douglas-Roberts stepped up.

Devin Harris scored 21 points and Douglas-Roberts added 18 off the bench as the New Jersey Nets beat the Miami Heat 100-98 in overtime on Thursday night in pre-season play.

The contest was played in Paris as part of an annual NBA Europe Live tour to promote the game globally.

The Nets and Heat take their show to London on Sunday. The New Orleans Hornets meet the Washington Wizards in Berlin on Tuesday, before traveling to Barcelona on Friday.

Though the Nets walked away with the win, they lost all-star small forward Carter, who finished with eight points before limping off the court with a left hamstring pull after scoring on a second quarter runner.

"I think it's just a little strained hamstring, we'll know more tomorrow," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "But that gave us an opportunity to see Chris Douglas-Roberts and his scoring practically held us together."

"The kid came right in and whap-whap-whap-whap - it's what he does," Frank added. "He changed the game with his scoring."

Carter's injury doesn't appear to be serious, and he hopes to return for Sunday's rematch.

"It feels OK, it was more like a tweak," he said. "I just want to be cautious and try and work my way into the lineup on Sunday if I can."

Dwyane Wade, and Michael Beasley - the second overall draft pick - topped the Heat scoring with 22 points apiece.

However, Beasley blew an opportunity to send the game into a second overtime in the waning seconds.

Miami's Daequan Cook buried a 22-footer with 18 seconds left to send the game into overtime knotted at 91-apiece.

Deadlocked at 95, Josh Boone muscled in for a tip-in and Douglas-Roberts made a layup with 1:23 left, putting the Nets on top 99-95. But rookie Mario Chalmers' runner, eight seconds later drew the Heat within two.

With 12 ticks to go, Beasley was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound. He hit the first free throw, but missed the second, leaving the Nets clinging to a 99-98 lead.

Eddie Gill split his free throws at the other end, giving the Heat another chance. After a timeout, Cook took the in-bounds pass with 1.9 seconds left, and launched a potential game-winning three-point try that fell well short of the mark at the buzzer.

Elsewhere: Houston Rockets 85, San Antonio Spurs 78 Newcomer Ron Artest scored 14 of his 18 points in the decisive first half, leading the host Rockets past their short-handed Texas-rival Spurs in pre-season play.

Von Wafer added 14 points, while Argentine Luis Scola finished with 13 for the Rockets (2-0) who led 50-34 at halftime.

The four-time NBA Champion Spurs opened their exhibition season without starters Tim Duncan, Bruce Bowen, Michael Finley and Argentine Manu Ginobili.

Rookie Malik Hairston led the Spurs with 10 points.

Dallas Mavericks 110, Chicago Bulls 102 Gerald Green scored 18 points, German wunderkind Dirk Nowitzki added 15 and the visiting Mavericks spoiled the NBA debuts of new Bulls' coach Vinny Del Negro and top overall draft pick Derrick Rose.

Aaron Gray netted 14 points, while Rose finished with 10 points, five assists and six of the Bulls' 27 turnovers in front of the helpless Del Negro.

Phoenix Suns 96, Utah Jazz 89 Newcomer Matt Barnes scored 21 points, and rookie Alondo Tucker added 11 of his 19 in the final quarters, as the visiting Suns beat the Jazz, to level their pre-season record at 1-1.

The Suns won despite receiving just five points from Shaquille O'Neal, and the absence of all-star forward Amare Stoudemire (right eye injury) along with Brazilian Leandro Barbosa (family reasons) for the second straight contest.

Kyle Korver scored 16 points for Utah (1-1) which was without all-star forward Carlos Boozer (sore left hamstring) for the second straight game.

LA Clippers 107, LA Lakers 80 Rookie point guard Mike Taylor scored 20 points, and newcomer Ricky Davis added 17 as the Clippers bounced the rival Lakers, in their pre-season opener.

Off-season acquisition Baron Davis had 12 points and seven assists for the Clippers, who outscored the defending Western Conference champions 32-15 in the final frame.

Vladimir Radmanovic led the Lakers (0-2) with 14 points, while reigning league MVP Kobe Bryant, Spain's Pau Gasol and backup guard Jordan Farmar added 12 points apiece.
