Nintendo is currently the undisputed leader in the gaming console market, its main rivals Microsoft and Sony, battling for second place. One of the reasons which makes Nintendo’s Wii so special is the design and sheer concept on which the entire gaming console is based on.
The Wii uses motion sensors, instead of the traditional gamepads, the Wiimote being used either as a sword or as a gun or, frankly, whatever the game dictates. Analysts at Macquarie Securities have taken a look at the Wii and have concluded the platform is far from conventional, either way one can look at it.
Financially, platform makes in the videogame industry have the habit on losing money on the hardware they sell, money regained from the sales of games, either third party or their own. The Wii is acting special in this category too, as experts have concluded that Nintendo makes a profit of $6 on every console sold.
It may not sound like a lot, but when you actually think about the millions of units sold, one can imagine the high profit Nintendo is making because of the Wii. Nintendo’s platform has a weak spot, though. It is well known that the best sold games for the Wii are produced by Nintendo itself, third party video games not selling as well as on Playstation or the Xbox.
If Nintendo could fix this, the profits would be even higher, as the most money is being made from third party agreements. The problem may lie in the fact that the Wii is so special, that adjusting a title for it poses a lot of problems.
