O. J. Simpson is not only a man facing charges of armed robbery, assault and kidnapping, but also a man anguished by his jealousy.
The New York Post reports that 60-year-old O. J. Simpson was full of rage six weeks ago, believing that his longtime girlfriend, 32-year-old Christie Prody, cheated on him with the hired help.
The handyman in question, Janos Gonzalez, and his wife, Marlene Gonzalez, told the Post that Simpson came to their home and made threats. Half an hour before parking his car in their driveway, the former professional football player had left an angry voicemail in which he accused Janos of having had sex with Christie.
Marlene told the Post that Simpson parked the car and, leaving his girlfriend in the front seat, approached her and told her about Janos and Christie’s affair. Janos came outside and told Simpson to leave, at which moment Simpson threatened to “kill” him.
Fifteen minutes later, the former NFL star had left, after Marlene called the police. The Gonzales couple filed a police report and described the incident as a verbal dispute, reports the Post.
While Marlene did suggest that O. J. reached behind him as if to draw a gun, she says there were no weapons involved. Miami police have not pursued the dispute case between O. J. Simpson and Janos Gonzalez.
Janos, who has been arrested a number of times in drug-related situations, told the Post he was hired to do landscaping and repairs at Simpson's $1 million home for a year. Their collaboration ended in late spring.
O. J. Simpson is currently free on $125,000 bail. After a bizarre alleged attempt at robbery of sports memorabilia in a Las Vegas hotel a week ago, he is faced with ten felony charges against him, including conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary with a deadly weapon, coercion with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.
The judge handling the case released O. J. only on condition that he surrender his passport and forbade him to have any contact whatsoever with the witnesses, victims or co-defendants in the case.
He is allowed to travel within the continental U.S. and has returned to his home in Miami, Florida. He is to return to court for a status check on Oct. 22.
The 60-year-old could spend the rest of his life behind bars as the two counts of first-degree kidnapping using a deadly weapon could bring a sentence of life in prison if he is convicted.
His lawyer, Yale Galanter, said Simpson would plead not guilty to all the charges at the upcoming arraignment.
Despite his successful career as an NFL player and later, as an actor, Simpson’s name is mostly associated with the 1994 double murder of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. He was acquitted of both murders.
