United States’ President-Elect, Barack Obama, seems to be very aware about the fact that time is not on his side. The nation’s 44th president is moving very quickly to fill up his cabinet which will help him tackle the challenges ahead.
The last name that is rumored to be on the list of his administration was that of Timothy Geithner, the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Obama will most probably name Geithner as his treasury secretary and this will most likely happen as soon as Monday.
It is not clear yet when Obama plans to unveil the members of his cabinet. He will take office as United States President on January 20.
Obama is still trying to assemble his cabinet and, according to John Podesta, a leader of Obama's transition team, he hopes for quick confirmation so the new administration can get to work as soon as possible, The Associated Press news agency reported.
The possibility of Geithner becoming treasury secretary came into discussion as New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said through one of her aides that the discussion were on track so that she would be appointed secretary of state. No final arrangement has been reached.
Geithner will most likely be formally appointed as Obama’s treasury secretary on Monday in Chicago. If nominated and confirmed by the Senate, Geithner will work to tackle the credit-crunch and economic crisis that struck America and spread around the world.
Another man who will fill one of the most important posts of Obama’s cabinet is Eric Holder. Obama has chosen Holder, who held the No. 2 slot in the Justice Department in President Bill Clinton's administration, as his top Cabinet echelon. Until now, Geithner worked as the chief of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a key position in the government’s strategy to tackle the financial crisis. He worked closely with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke.
Lawrence Summers, former President Bill Clinton’s last Treasury chief and one-time Harvard University president, will also get a senior White House position. He will succeed Ben S. Bernanke as Fed chairman in 2010.
Obama is expected to announce his economic team on November 24th, one of his aid said in conditions of anonymity, Bloomberg reported. The main task of Obama’s economic team will be to assemble a stimulus package to reinforce an economy that is facing one of the worst recessions.
Two other people who will most likely join the economic team are Obama’s top two economic advisers during the presidential campaign, Austan Goolsbee and Jason Furman. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is also rumored to be Obama’s top pick as commerce secretary.
Other picks for Obama’s cabinet include former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota as secretary of health and human services and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, the top pick as secretary of the Homeland Security Department. Under consideration for national security adviser are retired Gen. James Jones and James Steinberg, an Obama campaign aide.
