The survivor of the accident in which Princess Diana was
killed will testify on Wednesday for the inquest on her death.
Former bodyguard Trevor Rees, formerly known as Trevor
Rees-Jones, was on the front- seat passenger in the car on the fatal night of
August 31, 1997. He was the only survivor in that crush which killed Princess
Diana, Dodi Fayed, her boyfriend, and Henri Paul, their driver.
Rees suffered from multiple injuries and was hospitalized
many times. He had injuries at his lower jaw, pulmonary system and the base of
his brain.
He declared that he couldn’t remember anything from the
crash. The only thing that he was recalling was when they’ve left the Ritz
Hotel in Paris
on that night and the next thing waking up in a hospital bed, a week later.
That’s when he found from his parents that everyone in the car has died.
Rees was a bodyguard hired by Mohamed Al Fayed, Dodi Fayed’s
father, at the time of the accident. He was supposed to look after Dodi and the
princess as well. Because of his job requirements, Rees didn’t wear the seat
belt on that night so that he could have more mobility.
Right now he doesn’t work anymore for Al Fayed and the good
relationship he had with his former employer was gone.
According to CNN, he wasn’t happy with the departure from
the hotel that night and that neither him, nor the driver had received more
information from Dodi Fayed about the destination.
Also regarding the plan to leave the hotel by the back door
“was not the plan that I was happy with,” he said.
Another thing he didn’t agree with was Fayed’s idea to
travel in one car, the Mercedes, without a security behind them.
Rees declared that he left from Al Fayed because he felt
pressured to support his conspiracy theories regarding the accident.
Rees published in 2000 a book, "The Bodyguard's Story:
Diana, the Crash, and the Sole Survivor," in which he told his side of the
story about the crash.
