Praying Did Not Help Little Girl Survive

An 11-year-old girl died Sunday after her parents chose to pray for healing over seeking medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police in the Wausau suburb of Weston said.

Everest Metro police Chief Dan Vergin said autopsy results confirm Madeline Neumann died from diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition that develops when a person’s body has too little insulin. The girl was suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

“She got sicker and sicker until she was dead,” Vergin said, according to the Associated Press.

Her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann told the police their daughter’s death occurred because “apparently they didn’t have enough faith.” They were convinced that praying and calling other people to help pray would help the little girl get rid of her illness.

Moreover, the parents told the investigators, the girl’s last visit to a doctor was when she was 3 to get some shots, Vergin said.

The police were told about the girl’s condition by her aunt from California who contacted the Police Department out of concerns about the girl’s health and asked police to check on her nice. The girl was taken by ambulance from the family’s home on Maplewood Drive to Saint Clare’s Hospital in Weston where she was pronounced dead.

Marathon County Medical Examiner John Larson said diabetic ketoacidosis prevents the body from absorbing nutrients. The girl looked abnormally lean, he added.

The girl’s death remains under investigation and the results will be forwarded to the Marathon County district attorney’s office to determine if any crime was committed, Vergin said.

The Neumanns could not be reached for comment.
