Social networking and video blogging service Qik yesterday announced that the BlackBerry Pearl 8120, the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve 8320 and 8330 now support an alpha client which enables live video streaming.
The support is likely to extend to other models as well, but for now, users need to know they might experience different issues with the new service.
For the old Qikkers out there, all they need to do is download a file from a specific location onto their device, and then sign in with their username and password top start streaming to their profile on Qik.
The California-based company explained that the new service is actually a response to the numerous demands from users to come up with a mobile video streaming service.
There are still a lot of improvements that still need to be made, but Qik has promised to work on them. For example, the chat doesn’t show up overlays on the camera in this version. Furthermore, users are advised to use BlackBerry OS 4.5 and above for a good performance.
Some users have reported some bugs, especially on the BlackBerry Bold, which Qik said they are still working on. Users are encouraged to send all bug reports at blackberry@qik.com, in order to help Qik find the best way to improve the service.
In July this year, the company announced the opening of a public beta for Qik, with an expanded list of supported devices, with more compatible Symbian OS and Windows Mobile handsets.
Through Qik, users can stream videos to friends in Facebook, Twitter and other similar communities in a simple manner, just by logging in on the Qik website. The streams are automatically recorded and available through the user’s profile page.
