The mobile market is becoming more and more complex, and
rival companies seem to progress by following one simple philosophy: “whatever
you can do, I can do better.”
Research In Motion could not let rivals grab any more of the
smartphone market without a fight, and decided to approach the app store
solution: developers will be given new tools and technologies, to help them create new applications for BlackBerry smartphones.
The company said the tools will include a new plug-in for
Eclipse developers, as well as new features for the BlackBerry Plug-in for
Microsoft Visual Studio, for Web development capabilities.
As Alan Brenner, Senior Vice President BlackBerry Platform
at RIM said, “supporting web technologies and services is part of our ongoing commitment
to providing the best-in-class tools and services for mobile application and
development on the BlackBerry platform.”
Developers will be able to build applications using HTML,
JavaScript and XML, which will be then executed as Java applications on
BlackBerry smartphones, the company explained.
RIM will also offer support for Gears, which will enable
applications to run as standalone on BlackBerry smartphones. Gear support will
be available as of next year, and will include local cache, database and
multi-threaded JavaScript execution, to allow applications to run in the
background.
The announcement came just as Google entered the smartphone
market with the Android phone, and as Apple managed to surpass RIM in Q3 sales for
the first time ever. Furthermore, each of these giants has an app store, so RIM’s
announcement should not come as a surprise.
