“Raising the Bar” Gives The Picture Of A Courtroom Setting

Steven Bochco, creator of “NYPD Blue” and “L.A. Law” says he has always been captivated by the law. It comes as no surprise, since Bochco’s new courtroom drama “Raising the Bar” debuts on Monday at 10 p.m. EDT on TNT.

The show starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Jane Kaczmarek and Gloria Reuben observes public defenders and district attorneys as they bump into various cases.

“Law shows and cop shows are a wonderful opportunity to look at morals,” Steven Bochco said, according to the Washington Post. “You see the challenges -- the kind of compromises people are challenged, forced or seduced into making,” he explained the psychological side of his 10-episode series.

The legal representatives are worlds apart, although they all fight in the name of the law.

While some work in spotlessly clean offices equipped with old telephones, unfashionable cabinets and stacks of papers, others perform their duties in far less monotonous spaces provided with modern office equipments, sliding doors made entirely out of glass and the newest technology.

At the heart of “Raising the Bar” is actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who plays Jerry Kellerman, a confrontational public defender who both exchanges blows with a judge and sleeps with a prosecutor in the first episode.

Jane Kaczmarek from “Malcolm in the Middle” impersonates quarrelsome Judge Trudy Kessler, while Gloria Reuben, famous for playing the role of Jeanie Boulet on six seasons of the popular TV series “ER,” plays Kellerman’s sympathetic superior.

“I don’t want people to think the public defenders are the good guys, and the DA’s office are the bad guys,” said Melissa Sagemiller, who walks in the shoes of determined Assistant District Attorney Michelle Ernhardt, quoted by The Associated Press. “We’re going for the gray areas. I hope people are entranced with what Michelle does. She’s not someone you can root for all the time.”
