Review: Can “Twilight” Surprise Us?

No wonder he’s irresistible and has stirred an entire craze. Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen really is supernatural. Just think about it: ashen visage, red lips, seductive eyes, breathtaking maturity (maybe because he’s 108) and an ultra-protective attitude. Who would stay away from such a guy? Well, in “Twilight,” everybody keeps his or her distance from the mysterious high school student. Except for the beautiful and naïve Bella Swan, who falls for his obscurity and bizarre approaches on life… Perhaps because he is dead. But she has no idea. And this is what “Twilight” is all about.

Thus, don’t get too excited thinking about vampires, because the upcoming film based on one of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire novels is not as blood-spattering as you might think. In fact, blood is almost absent, while the story concentrates on the romance between Kristen Stewart’s teenage character and Edward Cullen.

The movie is no horror flick and lacks anything that the word “vampire” could possibly suggest, as vampires make plans for their big prom instead of hunting people for blood.

“Twilight” strives to bring several vampiresque elements into play, but one can’t possibly take blood-sucking seriously if characters spend whole scenes talking about prom dresses or adolescent dates. Therefore, Bella is on the one hand followed by a bunch of less peaceful vampires who have stuck to human liquid, and, on the other hand, she thinks about her beau and her teenage friend’s love issues, which fail to go further than “Should I ask him out?”-like problems.

When Bella moves to Forks, Washington, in order to live with her divorced father, she is inspired by her enigmatic classmate. What she does not know is that Edward is the member of an adopted family of supposed vampires who, nevertheless, have chosen to drink animal blood instead of their traditional “meal.” Edward is one of the followers of Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli), a patriarch who was turned into a supernatural creature in the 1600s, and has helped young people become vampires so as to avoid death ever since.

Although the love story between Edward and Bella is forbidden, they don’t have power over their feelings and continue their relationship. However, this gets the young girl into trouble, as three vampires, who are aware of the relationship between the two, pursue her for her blood. Now Edward has to save her from their pointed teeth, with the help of his family. But can they do it? Well, taking into consideration the fact that “Twilight” is a franchise, the answer seems pretty obvious. However, “Twilight” might surprise us after all.
