Ms. Condoleezza Rice’s official visit in Sweden took an interesting turn, when the US
Secretary of State was approached by an aide with an unusual question: would
she like to meet the rock band Kiss back at her hotel?
Ms. Rice, a known music fan, whose taste ranges from
classical music to rock and roll or blues, couldn’t refuse the invitation and,
after finishing dinner with the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, returned
to her hotel, the Stockholm Sheraton, where she and the rock band were
introduced, the Associated Press reported.
The Kiss members, Paul Stanley – guitar, Tommy Thayer –
guitar, Eric Singer – drums and Gene Simmons – bass guitar and vocals, were in Stockholm for a concert
at which they were going to perform live. The guys, all of which appeared
without their usual make-up for this occasion, gave free backstage access
passes good for a year to all of Ms. Rice’s aides, and signed autographs.
Condoleezza Rice, who is herself a trained pianist, said
that she was thrilled to meet the band, with which she discussed politics,
among other subjects. The US
Secretary of State said that she never went to a Kiss concert, but that she
liked their music. Her favorite Kiss hit is ‘Rock and Roll All Nite.’
Kiss formed in New
York in 1973 and it rose to fame in just a few years.
Parts of their success were their well known live performances, which included
gigs like fire breathing or smoking guitars. However, their trademark remained
their extreme use of make-up and stage costumes.
