Ringo Starr is nothing if not always a gentleman, a true
hippie at heart and a crowd pleaser, which is why you cannot really get angry
with the guy for pleading with his fans to stop sending him autograph requests.
The 68-year-old music legend has posted a funny video on his
official website, pleading with fans to stop sending him letters requesting
autographs as well as objects to be signed.
He begins his video with his trademark peace sign, wishes
everyone peace and love and goes on to say, quite passionately, that he wants
no more fan mail and that anything arriving in his mail box after October 20
will be “tossed.”
Explaining that he has too much to do and that signing
papers for his admirers is no longer a desirable activity, Starr interjects
“peace and love” a couple of times more and ends the video with another peace
sign.
Born Richard Starkey, the artist became the official drummer
of British pop/rock band The Beatles in 1962, a role that has forever engraved
his name in music history. Starr and fellow members Paul McCartney, George
Harrison and John Lennon formed one of the most critically acclaimed bands of
all time.
The Fab Four disbanded in 1970 but Starr went on to accomplish
a successful solo career and remains active to this day.
In recent years, he has toured extensively with his
All-Starr band, which performs Beatles songs, tracks from Starr’s solo albums
and other evergreens from the 1960s and 1970s.
We are left to suppose that Ringo Starr has been heroically
signing the thousands of letters coming his way all these years, as once
depicted in an episode of “The Simpsons.” He once guest starred in the popular animated
series as himself, tediously signing every piece of fan mail in his mailbox and
explaining that he did not care if it took him 20 years to finish the job,
those people had bothered to write to him and they deserved an answer.
Starr’s most recent studio effort, “Liverpool
8,” was released earlier this year. In July, in the midst of touring, the
drummer/singer/songwriter/actor made a special stop in Chicago to share peace, love(he has a lot of
that to go around it appears!) and cupcakes with fans who wished to celebrate
his 68th anniversary.
Starr had said in an interview that the best birthday he
could envision was to have people around the world flash the peace sign at noon
on July 7, his birthday, and the Hard Rock Café in Chicago made it a point to fulfill his wish. He
and wife Barbara Bach personally handed out Birthday cupcakes to fans.
So you can’t really blame the guy for not being generous
toward his fans. There comes a time when we all want a break though.
