Former Beatle drummer Ringo Starr was scheduled to perform on “Live with Regis & Kelly” on Tuesday and walked off because he and the show’s producers could not agree on the length of his song.
Ringo Starr was so dissatisfied with requests from the producers of the “Live with Regis & Kelly” show that he cancelled a performance less than one hour before he was scheduled to appear on the set with hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.
The program has a rule that songs are no longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds, the New York Daily News reports, and Starr’s song, when performed during rehearsals Monday morning, took nearly 5 minutes.
Producer Michael Gelman was willing to extend Ringo Starr’s time to 2 minutes and 45 seconds, but a rep for the singer said that was not acceptable and Starr was off.
“They refused to keep the performance and the interview commitment,” a show spokeswoman was quoted by the Daily News as saying.
“We offered to cut back our chat time and asked them to fade or go to commercial,” Starr's spokeswoman told The Associated Press. “They were not willing to do that and Ringo was not willing to cut it further, so without a compromise we were not able to stay.
“Ringo left saying, ‘God bless and goodbye. We still love Regis.’”
The 67-year-old musician, who became famous as one of the Fab Four in the 1960s, is currently promoting his new album, “Liverpool 8.”
The song he was going to play for Regis and Kelly was the title track, accompanied by fellow rocker Dave Stewart, of Eurhythmics fame.
The former drummer for the Beatles had reportedly been scheduled for his performance since November; show representatives say Starr’s camp had agreed to the time requirement for the song.
Stewart has apparently taken the incident quite personally, criticizing the show for trying to force “Ringo’s musical legacy take a back seat to additional banter about the size of Ms. Ripa’s derriere.”
The Daily News notes that a precedent for walking off due to conflict over the “Live” time limit was created by James Brown, 12 years ago.
