Looks like Jennifer Aniston might have scared her younger boyfriend John Mayer away with all the marriage and baby talk, as various media outlets reported the two split up.
What lasted more than a lot of people expected, prompting speculation that Aniston and Mayer were getting serious, ended earlier this week, according to U.K.'s Mirror, which broke the news first.
"They had a great time together but they are just in different places in their lives right now," a source close to Aniston, 39, told People.com. However, Mayer's friends are not ruling out the possibility of a reconciliation between the two since the rocker "never ends things with a clean slate. He likes to dwell on these relationships and sort everything out before saying goodbye for good."
Mirror's story seems to be based on the fact that Mayer is in Mexico with friends while Aniston remained in Los Angeles. It was earlier reported that the couple was spotted staying at a suite at the Four Seasons in L.A. over the weekend.
Tensions between two had been piling up for a while, sources told the newspaper, causing Aniston and Mayer to take a break from each other before making their decision final, but "sadly, it doesn't seem to have worked."
"John took the decision to end things as he felt he just wasn't ready for the level of commitment that Jennifer deserved. Contrary to reports, Jen didn't want to have kids or marry this year, but she did want to set a timetable for their future together," the source explained.
Since their split, the two exchanged some words over the phone as they're trying to remain on good terms, but Jennifer is more reluctant than willing to make peace.
Other sources quoted in Us Weekly's latest issue, on newsstands now, claim that, "It is really a cooling-off," period, "not this big, dramatic breakup," everyone speculates it to be. "These are mature people who talk about things maturely," the pal explained. "It's just slowed down."
Adding a little pinch of credence to these stories, NY Daily News reported that Aniston "is already dating someone else in LA" and that Mayer had to use some special eye cream to reduce puffiness before a performance, suggesting he might have cried or had trouble getting rest.
Since going public in late April, Aniston introduced Mayer to her close friends, Courtney Cox and her husband David Arquette. The couples double dated on an occasion. During Mayer's recent tour, Aniston attended many of his gigs, both within the country and in Europe.
The former "Friends" star has been unable to find love since her divorce four years ago from Brad Pitt, who, on the other hand, celebrated the birth of twins with Angelina Jolie last month.
