According to a chief Aruban prosecutor, the tape showing
Dutch student confessing that he was with missing teenager Natalee Holloway on
the night when she died and had his friend get rid of her body is acceptable in
court.
Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos said on Monday that is most likely
that the tape will be accepted in court as it was made by a civilian without
being influenced by authorities.
He said: ''I take it very seriously,'' the Associated Press reports.
A prosecution request to detain Joran Van der Sloot, the Dutch
student, based on this information was denied by a judge in Aruba,
but Mos said that on Tuesday they will file an appeal and will wait for the
decision.
According to Mos, after the tape was broadcasted on Dutch
television, two homes of Van der Sloot in Netherlands were searched by
authorities. They took a hard drive and a laptop.
The tape shows Van der Sloot talking with Patrick van der
Eem, a 34-year-old Dutch businessman, who spent two weeks trying to get close
to the young man smoking marijuana with him on regular basis and playing poker.
Van der Eem talked with Dutch television crime reporter Peter R. de Vries about
the case, and de Vried got a hold of a Range Rover equipped with secret cameras
to tape their conversation.
On the tape Van der Sloot says that Holloway, 18 was drunk
when they were kissing on a beach in Aruba on
May 2005. She started to shake and fell unconscious.
Van der Sloot said in Dutch: “Suddenly she started shaking
and then she didn't say anything.”
“I would never murder a girl,” he added.
After he tried to wake her up, the student didn’t call the
police, but a friend who took her body and dumped it into the sea.
He didn’t know if the girl was dead when his friend “Daury”
took her away.
Van der Sloot said last week that he was lying on the tape and
rejected any allegations regarding his implication in Holloway’s death.
Natalee's mother, Beth Twitty, told ABC: “I don't think any
of us are surprised by his reaction (that his comments were fiction), but I
know one thing. Once people see the video of Joran there are no more questions.
There is no one who can walk away from this believing that he is innocent. Natalee
never even had the chance for a medical doctor or a coroner, anyone, to determine
(if she was alive).”
