Michael Moore’s 97-minute long documentary “Slacker Uprising” will be available for free download to North American residents, for a period of three weeks, beginning September 23.

Taking a leaf out of Radiohead’s and Neil Young’s book, Michael Moore has decided to celebrate his twentieth year in the film-making business by offering his most recent documentary as a gift to his fans. Moreover, his hope is that his bold move will get out the vote for the upcoming presidential elections.

„Slacker Uprising” is the first major film to be realeased this way. In the music industry, however, free online distribution is no longer news. Last year, Radiohead released their seventh album called „In Rainbows” online and in 2006, Neil Young streamed his „Living With War” album for free.

The documentary cost approximately $2 million to make and it depicts Michael Moore’s 62-city tour during the 2004 presidential elections, on which he urged young people to exercise their right to vote.

Michael Moore, 54, has directed and produced three of the top five highest-grossing documentary films of all time: „Fahrenheit 9/11,” which is very critical of United States president George Bush and of the War on Terrorism, also, „Sicko”-a documentary concerning the American health care system-and „Bowling for Columbine,” which earned Moore both international recognition and an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Moore describes himself as a liberal and a fierce critic of globalization, gun possession, the Iraq War and of large corporations. In 2005, he was named one of the world’s 100 most influential people by Times magazine.

As of 1990, he has been married to producer Kathleen Glynn, with whom he has a stepdaughter.
