Sony announced via its PlayStation blog that it has managed to convince Activision, Harmonix and Konami to offer cross compatibility for the instruments that need to be used to play the music games that these companies produce.
What this means is that you won't need to buy two guitars, one to play “Guitar Hero: World Tour” and one to play “Rock Band 2.” Instead, you will be able to buy only one of these instruments and then use it to play both games. What is more, it seems that drum sets will also be compatible and the games will also support SingStar microphones.
However, it looks like there might be certain features that are specific to these games which will require gamers to use the instruments that are created by the game's developer in order to benefit of them. Even so, Sony says that “Guitar Hero: World Tour,” “Rock Band 2” and “Rock Revolution” instruments will enjoy “basic compatibility.”
It is no wonder that Sony struggled to obtain this compatibility since the instruments used to play “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” have long been compatible on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Taking into account the popularity of these games, if Sony wouldn't have made the move, it might have come behind its main competitor in sales.
For those of you wondering whether Sony will assure this compatibility for older versions of these games as well, the blog post read that “We’re still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly.”
