The young woman who was in the center of the scandal which ended with the resignation of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer stepped forward and gave her side of the story in an interview with People magazine.
Ashley Alexandra Dupre, a 23-yer-old girl who was working as a high-end escort, told People that she was informed by the FBI agents that one of her clients is under investigation. She later realized that it was Gov. Spitzer when she saw him resign on TV. Spitzer’s resignation came a few days after details about the fact that he used the services of Emperors Club VIP, where Dupre worked under the name of Kirsten.
Dupre apologized to Spitzer’s wife. She said that what struck her most when she saw the Governor resigning on TV was the face of Silda Wall Spitzer.
"I try not to revisit that place too often, but when I think about his speech, I think of her face, her eyes, the hurt," she told People.
"I'm sorry for your pain," she added.
In another interview, this time with ABC News' Diane Sawyer, Dupre said that she doesn’t feel responsible for Spitzer’s downfall. She explained that she was only doing her job and if it wouldn’t have been her, another girl would have pleasured the NY Governor.
"I was doing my job. I don't feel that I brought him down," Dupre said.
Her rendezvous with Spitzer took place at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. The governor was in town with business, but he did not mind mixing it with pleasure. After the story broke, Dupre left the capital and went to her family’s home in New Jersey to seek refuge.
"I felt like it was surreal, like it wasn't happening," she said on ABC ‘20/20.” "But it was."
However, Dupre wants to take full advantage of the situation and said she would like to get involved in music, fashion and "writing books." As for prostitution, “never again” she said.
